ALUMINUM SEAWALL
Any owner of a property located on a waterfront faces a big threat of erosion. Some waterfronts have seawalls, but most of the responsibilities concerning the repair, maintenance and replacement of the seawalls is mainly delegated to the property owners. Among the materials used in construction of seawalls is aluminum, a material that we at Seawalls of Michiana are quite comfortable with. We assist property owners in Southern Michigan and Northern Indiana to construct seawalls to keep their properties safe. Building a seawall involves the use of some heavy machinery, and expertise, which is why you need us.
The steps that we follow in aluminum seawall construction are as follows: |
1.Planning the construction
a) Surveying the area
This step involves walking along the part intended to have a seawall to get the length of the track and make a sketch of the shore’s rough routine, while making note of special changes in sharp curves or elevation before using spray paint to make marks at intervals of 2.43m for the poles.
b) Tracking the mark of high water
We then make use of the existing posts, rocks or any other landmarks as a way of tracking the water’s height for not less than a month, mostly during the day’s highest tide. This proves helpful when we decide the height of a seawall we are going to erect.
c) Researching the local regulations
There are rules varying from states or county which regulate what can be built, some cases necessitating a permit or inspection of the area before building starts. We make the effort of contacting the relevant offices to determine the rules and acquire permits where necessary.
2.Setting the poles
a) Preparing the metal pipes
We then weld together 4 U-shaped rebars onto all the metal pipes, with the first rebar piece being 10cm from the pipe’s top, the second 10cm below it, the third 20cm below, and the fourth 10cm below that.
b) Digging the holes and setting the poles
We then dig holes, each about 2’ deep and 10’’ wide for every metal post, using a jackhammer. We then set the poles making them uniform and even with one another using a level while adjusting the holes where necessary. We then pour quick-drying cement to fill every hole and give it 24 hours to set.
3.Installing the aluminium sheets
a) Shaping and drilling rebar holes into the aluminum
We then cut and shape up the aluminum boards to fill the spaces between all sets of poles while measuring each board and space before cutting to avoid discrepancies due to shoreline changes. We then line the boards with the sets of poles and mark locations to be drilled for the rebar. Each board has 2 holes on either side.
b) Installation of the boards
We slide each rebar piece onto its hole to fit the boards on the poles, install the aluminum boards, then twist a washer and nut to each rebar piece for securing it.
c) Filling the land side
We can use large gravel and rocks to fill your property’s land side for adequate drainage then cover them with sand and a topsoil layer.
d) Maintenance
We then make arrangements with you to have the seawall receive annual maintenance where we look for crevices and weaknesses that might have developed and correct them.
